"I'm an easy fool, I'm not chasing the truth..."
"Yearning for Vitalists" by London based The Birthday Letters, the moniker of singer songwriter Joseph Hughes, feels, at times, like it exists from the post middle ages with acoustic picking resembling rain drops falling down and lyrics seeming to pose questions to a higher power in an old English Church. Now, I realize this sort of stained glass persona is all in my head, imagery no doubt having more to do with Hollywood's impressions as a child than scholarly historical references as an adult. All theoretical notions aside, I can only tell you what I feel as I listen.
By any stretch of anyone's imagination, Hughes as The Birthday Letters has crafted one hell of a heavenly piece of art, unique with lyrics that are joined with interesting connective tissue. "Do microbes have a soul and does it matter?", yes indeed.

The Birthday Letters is the music of Joseph Hughes, a singer and songwriter originally from Shropshire based in London. Once described by Stereogum as having a ‘soft spoken theatricality to his delivery’, he has never lived it down since.
‘The debut record from England’s The Birthday Letters absolutely astonished me. A fantastic expression of inventive production decisions, honest songwriting and gorgeous soundscapes. Human Beauty was every bit one of my favourite underground albums of 2020 - and deserves your attention’.

‘Hughes' vocal aesthetic reminds me a bit of a blending of Death Cab's Ben Gibbard and Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan which is meant as a supreme compliment. Awww, nice to have musical gems like this to marvel in.’
- American Pancake
‘Simple indie rock perfection’
- The Darkside Reviews
‘Built to soundtrack contemplative early-aughts indie films, or to make your own life feel like one’
- Stereogum
