"hey old friend do you remember singing everywhere we would go..."
There is a moment 51 seconds into "Old Friend" by Houston bred, New York's Hudson Valley based singer songwriter Denitia where faint goose bumps raised up on my arms and I felt chills skate across my nervous system. It happens after the song hangs on a C# chord and then as the chord progression begins (while Denitia's beautiful vocal melody hesitates then rises) a counter point lead guitar slides from B to D# then A# until resting down on F#. That emotional touch is one of many layers of elegance, of sophistication.
The song floats with heavy acoustic guitar strums over a pouring organ sound as a bass and beat like a dominant time piece feels melancholy: “Forgive me if I’m doing that thing, Where folks romance all that was / But my memory was dark..." and as longing and loss holds hands and a sort of 70's toned Glen Campbell-esque lead makes you fall into your own feelings, I sensed (in some ways) an amalgam of Phoebe Bridgers and Aimee Mann holding hands too.
A gorgeous folk diorama, maybe garden rock, "Old Friend" leads to Denitia's upcoming "Highways" project on October 14th (2022).

Denitia is a singer-songwriter who exemplifies American cultural enlightenment.
Born and raised outside Houston, Denitia’s southern heritage forms a canvas for her evolving musical portrait. As a child, she performed in church choirs, and taught herself to play piano and guitar from her family’s trailer in the woods. She carried those experiences with her as she made her way around the country, moving to Nashville for college, and Brooklyn thereafter.
Now based in New York’s Hudson Valley, Denitia’s portfolio of work reveals melodic stories spanning states, cities, and times. In her latest release, she takes listeners on a drive through the lanes of love and longing over the course of American grandeur. Fusing elements of country, folk and rock, Denitia establishes a newfound American utopia, ongoing and indefinite, uplifted by wistful vocals and the chimes of a tambourine.
With her songs as mantras, Denitia aims to reimagine what it means to be home.
