"she is the fogging in your mirror, she's the darkness at the middle of the day..."
Some songs feel like books, some like movies and some like movie trailers. With it's raised hand moodiness, it's brooding tension, it's interpretive lyrics, ""Catastrophic Hope" by Bad Rat? is an exquisitely captivating piece of sonic art and a fucking stunning soundscape for a movie trailer. Now I stumbled upon this fact quite accidently but as I was delving into that new movie many of us are curious about I played pushed play on ""Catastrophic Hope" and a nanosecond later pushed play on the trailer for "Don't Worry Darling" (with the sound off) and, well, my mouth parted and my eyes grew larger and my pulse quickened.
Now this experiment I undertook was after listening to Bad Rat? sort of mind bending dip into darkness or, at least, reflective sadness a half a dozen times and when my desire to see the "DWD" trailer happened so did the idea to pair them up. The result, once again, is breathtaking.
Of the song, Bad Rat? from Southampton, Massachusetts share:
Catastrophic Hope was written recorded and produced in a single night during the recent heat wave. I reached peak derangement playing my acoustic guitar with a violin bow in a closet for this.
I can see that, I can see this song just coming up like purging something, totally ID, totally needed for reasons unknown (or something like that). The song is part of a single and side B is different in tone but equally captivating.

Since the snowstorm that started it all, Bad Rat? has created music in a wide array of genres, cities, and states of mind. Above all, Bad Rat? tells listeners that inspiration can be found wherever you are, from a rustic cabin in the woods of Northern Wisconsin built by hooligans, to a small apartment in nowhere Vermont affectionately named, “the Frog House,” later upgraded to “the Frog Palace” in Western Massachusetts. Musically, Bad Rat? draws from inspirations across genres, mixing indie rock and alternative classics with atmospheric and gothic influences. On “it’s just the house settling,” you heard post-punk-inspired alt-rock numbers interspersed with instrumental interludes. What you'll hear next will guide you through the ascension. Bad Rat? is a band of non-hobbyists. Their dream venue is The Ruckus Room.
