"never should of let you come here, never should of let you take space, I don't wanna die and I hope you forget my name... forget my name..."
I think the last time I saw an indie rock artist being pushed around in a shopping cart was a 17 year old Thom Yorke (1995 Fake Plastic Trees). Now the intense energy of "No Doz" by WAAX is a whole other thing all together but I can hear post punkian indie rock strains that do hearken back to times before. I mean we all reference art of all sorts by the personal cue in our brain and because I am a 70's kid I can hear an amazing cross generational multi-genre'd thing happening. The pretty yet hard guitar shapes feel, indeed, a bit Smashing Pumpkins (circa 1996), the kinetic new wave massive beat and Maz Devita beautifully sharply edged vocal countenance is magnetic. In total, I am feeling an amalgam of artists like the aforementioned Pumpkins, iterations of No Doubt, MGMT, M.I.A, Slowly Slowly and more. "No Doz" is an absolute banger with one of the most sonically rich catchy choruses I have heard in a long time.

Australian rock four-piece WAAX return with their long-awaited, highly-anticipated sophomore LP in 2022 – At Least I’m Free, out now. Featuring their signature ferocious sound that has won them a legion of fans both in Australia and internationally, At Least I’m Free also boasts an exciting new level of song-writing that sees them explore a myriad of styles – from punk anthems to piano ballads. That is thanks in part to working alongside producers Bernard Fanning (Powderfinger) and Nick Didia (Bruce Springsteen), as well as collaborating with US heavyweights Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes, P!nk, Christina Aguilera) and K.Flay. The result is a record unlike anything WAAX has released before, but is guaranteed to find its way into the hearts of rock lovers everywhere. As WAAX lead singer Maz Devita says, “Our album is one of duality and extremes. The highest highs and lowest lows. No in-betweens. BUCKLE UP.”
