"what did you do today, did you cry? Cuz I did, just a little bit..."
The chill, sleepy, surfy cadence of 'japanese car' by West Wales singer-songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Emyr Sion gently pushes a sort of alt country meets lounge pop sounds as Emyr comes to terms with his inner angst, feelings of restlessness. There is a sense of self deprecation and beating yourself up, of panicking when that special person doesn't call. I dig this song because sometimes varying degrees of depression or feeling lost can invade your mind when you are too still.
In Wayne's World there is the funny iconic quote by Wayne Campbell: "I once thought I had mono for an entire year, It turned out I was just really bored." I thought about that line while listening.
Emyr sings, laments "I want to be somewhere, buses only run twice a day..." and ultimately getting that 'japanese car' represents change, movement, freedom and possibilities.

The first release from Emyr Sion is a double-a side titled 'addfwyn x japanese car.' The first of the two tracks, 'addfwyn' is a Welsh language homage to British folk music of the late 60's and early 70's, with intricate acoustic guitar picked beneath lyrics about the anxiety of growing older. The second, 'japanese car' was written as the world returned to normality in 2022 and deals with the intensity of city life as the world gets back up to speed.
"Emyr Sion plays a role in a number of Welsh-language projects, notably ARGRPH and Los Blancos. Now writing and recording under his own name, he is free to share his more honest and intimate experiences, his anxieties and mental health being frequent topics occasionally making for difficult listening but surprisingly frank against the reserved delivery, combining for contemplative listening."
Nice to meet you Emyr.

Writing folk and country inspired hooks wrapped in psychedelic melodies to stave off repeated existential crises, Emyr Sion is inspired by the barn-made West Coast music of the 1970's, and the elegiac music of modern alternative country.
Combining simple and organic instrumentals with deeply personal and often self-deprecating lyrics, Emyr Sion writes honestly and openly about his thoughts and feelings, translating into timid and listless vocals which squat heavily over sonically pleasing guitar riffs ranging from dreamy and psychedelic to country and folk, with the occasional sneaking distortion.
