"now I hear talking from the trees about everything that saved you..."
Listening to the brooding, ever ramping up glacial edges of 'Crescent-Shaped Ice' by German singer-songwriter, composer, and visual artist Steve Luxembourg and you hear a story told with enough poetic vagueness to feel like a mystery, an ember that could go out or catch fire. Amid running piano, a constant flurry of tom toms and snare hits, sustaining guitar notes, thumping bass lines, and swelling layers of sound Luxembourg's vocal patter exists somewhere between spoken word and singing. That voice aloof but not fully stoic feels (maybe) emotionally calloused in some way at least to appear strong, to swallow tears before they even pour out of eye sockets.
Really love the lead guitar lines and growing piano and the ever present drumming. These musical elements anchor the emotionality, keep them earth bound.
Press notes reveal:
In autumn 2021, Steve Luxembourg retreated to the rural seclusion of a deserted hotel in Burgundy, FR, to write his current album 'On Starlings', which he proceeded to record and produce on his own during the winter and spring months of 2022 in his studio space in Braunschweig. The 10 tracks got subsequently mastered at Fabian Tormin’s all analogue studio at Plätlin Mastering Hamburg.

Characterized by warm piano sounds and complex beats, by harmonium and bottleneck guitars, On Starlings builds up an intimate complexity, that hints at indie rock idols like The National or Bright Eyes, only to shift back into elegant distance in a chilling post-punk manner with driving bass and accentuated electronic sounds. Luxembourg's autobiographically influenced lyrics are permeated with motifs of personal change. The characters of his dark coming-of-age ballads are torn between the search for stability and security and the liberation from toxic relationships, to eventually lose themselves in the intoxication and loneliness that follows.
