"This is my national anthem, that I’m singing to myself as I walk to the cross town bus..."
The choppy, acerbic, maybe even disgruntled punk discourse of "F-Stop" by Holyoke, Massachusetts based Cheap City jams, slams and pummels. The alt rock narrative seems to have something to do with the pressure cooker of city life and taking public transportation. "F-Stop" is the first single from Cheap City's upcoming album, TEN YEARS WITHOUT RAMI HOLDING, out on January 13th via Dollhouse Lightning. It was engineered and mixed by the band and mastered by Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden.
I am digging the inclusion of keys, the vocal aesthetic that wails in a manic way, the heaviness that feels unbridled while still have a sense of camp. Casio-fied punk tones, proto punk weirdness, the sound of instruments thrown down the stairs and super surprising and quirky outro with it's sci-fi 60's Theremin sounds that probably aren't. Dig it.

Formed in 2018 C.E. (Cheap Era), the Cheap City Cultural Ambassadors seek to present a musical interpretation of the city at large. September’s Clocktower Broke documented the rise and fall of the Cheap City Clock Company and was followed by a northeast tour of the United States. In April 2019 Cheap City released Rats and Rascals which documented in part the rise of the Fructose Four, a gang known for holding up local candy stores. Cheap City’s brand of disco meets punk meets history has been described as “Fugazi writing a disco record.” From the first history lesson: Upon the city’s inception, The Seven Founders declared that rock and roll, while masquerading as acoustic liberation, is the most fascist of the sonic arts, because the band must impose their will upon the audience. The Founders sought a musical style that would allow each individual listener to express themselves in conjunction with the performer. The Founders soon decreed that Cheap City’s official form of music would be any in which the groove is paramount. And Cheap City became the world’s first government to transform from a democracy, into a dance floor democracy. Cheap City expects to release Tanked for Jupiter at the end of 2019, a tale of truckers and intergalactic space travel.
