"it's your world and the world is so fucked.... (to paraphrase)"
The unwavering manic energy and wonkiness of "Devil" by Ted Tyro, a Louisville, Kentucky band formed around the tape machine recordings of Bart Swift, feels like a collision of late 70's proto punk, 90's art punk and iterations of progressive alternative punk modes. The track is magnetic, for me, especially the marriage of the bass and rabid guitar lines and the breaks that let you breath, dig the vocal aesthetic too. Don't ask me why but I thought of Pere Ubu, Television, Devo and for some odd reason Bruce Wooly and the Camera Club (about 20% of you reading this will likely know who they are).
Ted Tyro shares this about "Devil" that, incidentally was recorded August 2022 by Anne Gauthier at La La Land Studios, Louisville KY.
"written around the idiom “better the devil you know than the devil you don’t.” a rumination on the devils we continue to live with - individually and as a society - because of a refusal to change"
Art punk, often, tends to stray into political punk, into societal observations and opening minds and I like that. I feel that here too.
