"I'm a touch conceited, your a hair obtuse / a marriage of convenience, a target of the moon..."
When I fall gleefully into the playful seriousness or serious playfulness (?) of "Conceited" by Dan Rico I am reminded how much I love songs that contain a certain kind of whimsy that is hard to pinpoint. I think it has to do with artful sideways views, tentacles into 60's and 70's stoner rock, the kind of hippie graced garden rock when better times felt only a teenage inspired revolution away. I love the acerbic lyrics and Rico's vocal countenance that floats over nostalgic acoustic percolations. Rico lovingly seems to borrow some trust fallen faint remembrances of melodies or circular rhythms, signature punch ups that remind me of artists like The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who (Happy Jack) but also artists like Emitt Rhodes, Nick Drake and the magnetic pull (whimsical filters of) Magnetic Fields or the urban collective consciousness of early Simon and Garfunkel and that's quite ok, that's perfectly ok with me.
Press notey stuff reveal that:
Conceited tells the tale of a relationship ending, a romantic mismatch. Acoustic guitar reveries and psychedelic swirls cajole earnest, authentic, and bittersweet lyrics. A danceable beat kicking in during the chorus really drives the message home: “This isn’t gonna work out—- but it doesn’t mean i don’t love you!”
Dan Rico bends 16 millimeter imagery and roller coaster melodies that feel like sad hugs in ways that feel sort of like bucket playing, hand clapping acoustic busker punk before punk was a thing.

"Rico's solo outing may catch you by surprise, as these simple & catchy pop hits, executed with a dash of pomp and sympathy, crash right into a soul-laden groove of sophistication, yet still retain a semblance of his impossible-to-hide lo-fi posterior." -Victim of Time
