The jubilant punchy downbeats of "Pleasure in a Fast Void" by Houston, Texas based rock indie artists Mister Data has the distinction of feeling exhilarating, upbeat, even uplifting while feeling sad too. Maybe it is the juxtaposition of big guitars against plaintive Mellotron-esque sounds or maybe it is lyrics like these delivered with a tender, sage like vocal countenance by guitarist / singer Austin Sepulvado:
"Pleasure in spades in a fast void / You feel so helpless and paranoid / Maybe the stakes are too high? / You feel so restless and you don't know why / A smile on your face is a life line / But it means nothing if we can't act kind... "
I absolutely love the synergy of this band, the musical punctuations to the emotive vox. The lyrics blend earnest direct words coupled with curious poetic turns and I like this as well. An amalgam of Beat Happening, Pavement and R.E.M. flashed in my head as I listened.
This wonderfully pained and elevated song ends on these lyrical notes: "A smile on your face is a life line / But it means nothing if we can't act kind / Empathy fades and crumbles and dies / Can't trust the future so we turn back time / Sleep on it maybe this time you won't cry..."
I am not crying but maybe only because I swallowed them.
