"forever, they say that nothing lasts forever..."
The unfettered beauty and heightened reality of "Forever" by the Brooklyn based rock band Big Girl, the project of lead singer and songwriter Kaitlin Pelkey, feels so pure, uncontaminated by today's favorite indie rock tropes of the day. As sounds twist in interesting ways, Pelkey's stunning vocal countenance that melodically, at times, feels from another time, maybe the stuff of 60's lullabies and torch songs in repose and other times times from an impassioned Off Broadway musical with doo wop embraces and languid walks through rain soaked streets and puddles.
Not for the feint of art and despite the incredible potent go for broke, swing for the fences vocals, the feeling of pain, heartbreak and deep loss is real because "Forever" is a cathartic ballad that Pelkey penned while coping with the loss of her mother. The track, the 3rd on Big Girl's debut LP "Big Girl vs. GOD" bounces in my brain, they lyrics speak to me having lost both my parents a long time ago. You never fully heal, the scars just thicken over time. Such a great song that I have listened to on repeat for more than a half hour. It is that kind of sonic onion with layers to peel away, again and again.
Bravo Kaitlin and Big Girl.

Big Girl, is a queer-fronted, vivid, and ambitious Rock & Roll band. Big Girl’s harmonically adventurous songs are filled with delicious lyrics, and athletic guitar playing, driven by soaring vocals – sometimes a chorus of them. Their live shows are filled with theatrics that range from hilarious to heartbreaking, exploring the grotesque comedy of capitalism subverting gender norms as well as unearthing deep corners of grief.
Both gripping and familiar, Big Girl sounds like an old friend, like driving with the windows down, like giggling drunk on your bedroom floor. Liable to make you dance or cry or call up that old flame.
