"I dedicate my love to no one but the spirit / the same one that's in me / the same one that's in you..."
The engrossing sound of "Siddhartha", the debut single from international collective, The Number Red, who are based between Berlin, London and Prague, feels beautifully organic, vintage, whimsical and moving. While the sonics may not feel steeped as far back as the 1922 Hermann Hesse novel that I assume inspired this song, it certainly feels born, burned out of 60's incense and bohemian folk underpinnings. The percussive push, the pearly acoustics and crystalline orchestrations, gospel-esque organ sounds, lovely bass lines that whirl like a dervish, droning tubular sounds and, most especially, the British vocal countenance that feels honed by a sage and emotional explorer is beautifully mysterious and unique.
No less than an intriguing sonic journey but more than just a ditty, this feels special and a lovely introduction to a band I know absolutely nothing about. The Number Red debut album, ''The Purple Light'' drops on August 30th, 2023.
