"If they took my head / three will grow back..."
What the fuck man? What the fuck is going on? First of all I cannot divorce Name Sayers' "Three Will Grow Back" from the creepy sort of deranged Official Video that accompanies it. The boys bring in Brooklyn rapper Chris Conde, Orlando rapper E-Turn and legendary MC5 guitarist, Wayne Kramer (YES REALLY) and like a fatal collision of massive avant metal, conscious rap / hip hop and experimental industrial rock that (off the top of my head) made me think of an amalgam of artists like Tomahawk circa 2010, vintage Obie Trice / Mos Def and Einstürzende Neubauten (1985), I am pushed back in my seat. My body twisted (figuratively) like I have a severe case of emotional spondylitis and unable to move.
This song that Name Sayers says is an "intuitively psychedelic take on the sense of resiliency which can result from sustained political resistance" is amazingly weird but drop dead gorgeous as well. It feels ballsy, subversive holding it's own empowerment in a raised fist of sound. The sonics are perfectly rendered to cajole, draw you in as you allow it to fester under your skin,
"Three Will Grow Back", another juggernaut from the bands 2023 full length "Joyboys In The Grindhouse", stands as a surreal unique vision, part horror show and part political fodder, gorgeous nightmare fuel, something to behold. The album was produced by Grammy nominee Grant Eppley (for Spoon's Lucifer On The Sofa). Name Sayers' personnel includes Devin James Fry on vocals and various instruments, Grant Himmler on bass, Garrett Hellman on guitar, and Marc Henry on drums.
