"leave me higher and I want more and more..."
After a trippy illusory intro, the beautiful density of sound on "Dreamy Eyes" by Brooklyn-based Imaginary Tricks is, quite frankly, artfully mind blowing. A mystifying blend of acid jazz, progressive rock, post punk through dreamy filters. At IT's core has always been Mike Visser and Tim Talavera with other talented players assisting their sound and as press notes indicate:
The addition of Pat Torres and Tim Talavera was key to the musical exploration on their 2022 LP, "Watch It" (via Park The Van) and it was translated beautifully by the wizard and three-time Grammy nominated Engineer and Producer Mike Tierney.

The powerful and sublime "Dreamy Eyes" is from their 2023 "Richie's" EP. The intricate musicality, tightly wound progressive rock /jazz fusion of Imaginary Tricks falls somewhere between Yes and Camel on one end of the spectrum and Porcupine Tree and Weather Report on the other end. Heady stuff indeed.
This is the kind of music you want to experience live, the kind of music you want to play. Sonically and conceptually inspiring.

The energy in its many forms can be an odd thing and with music it usually starts with a single sound and slowly, from a distance, that sound sneaks up grabs you and shakes you. And sometimes, just maybe it changes you.
Brooklyn-based Imaginary Tricks has played in various idioms since its inception, but at its core are Mike Visser and Tim Talavera. With clear reference points that can be traced back to indie rock, jazz, and experimental, Visser takes his skills at arrangement and musicianship to levels that will certainly surprise long-time followers of Visser’s work. The addition of Pat Torres and Tim Talavera was key to the musical exploration on their new LP, 'Watch It' (out August 19 on Park The Van) and it was translated beautifully by the wizard and three-time Grammy nominated Engineer and Producer Mike Tierney.
Tim Talavera has played in various groups as a leader and sideman until meeting Mike Visser and the sounds of Imaginary Tricks. Having navigated the jazz landscape for years, Tim found similar qualities such as freedom of expression and improvisation in the music of Imaginary Tricks. Born in Australia to Chilean parents, bass player Pat Torres has a plethora of musical knowledge from across the globe that was applied in supporting the low end for Imaginary Tricks. Visser and Imaginary tricks are a delicate balance. These guys are fiercely talented with a mean streak that captivates you with their songs.
