"Interseamed in my entire being / There is an eye that sees a new reality / As I journey through every vision / The further I travel from the world I knew before / Can’t wake from what was not a dream...."
Steeping in the deeply drawn "Dream Behemoth" by Louisville, Kentucky's self described "only Denim Psych band on earth" DOOM GONG and I am convinced that my favorite part is the wonderfully tightly coiled and supple bass work but then, 20 seconds lately, I am convinced that the tense strings are, and then the daring flugal horn and synthesizer marriage and then the psychedelic sparkle and sting of that one key progression and then the rumbling, shuffling drum work and then the hushed shoegaze vocals and so it goes around and around in my brain. The truth is that the entire f*cking thing, arrangement and aural artful sweep, is stunning through and through.
If there is one criticism, it might be the artistic decision to essentially bury the vocals but still, that decision makes you lean into the song and thankfully the lyrics are on DOOM GONG's Bandcamp page. The words seem to suggest how tenuous reality is or, at least could be. And, for me, might also suggest that each of us deciding what is real and what is not, might serve us well at some times in our lives. Anyway, that is what I thought about in my scattered head.
"Dream Behemoth" is the title track of DOOM GONG latest album, just released about 2 weeks ago and I can't help but think of it's sound being alive with certain touchstones of 70's theme songs. As a fan of 60's and 70's film composers I am feeling memory traces of Henry Mancini's "Megeve" from his 1963 Charade soundtrack and aspects of David Shire's masterful soundtrack for 1974's The Taking Of Pelham One-Two-Three, or maybe a collision of both in terms of temperament although, to be absolutely clear, "Dream Behemoth" is an all encompassing original and a great one at that.
If you want to take an amazing trip, kick back, and listen to "Dream Behemoth", the song and the album.
