"turn to you / across the bed / in the morning sun / just a silhouette..."
The sonic pointillism of "Toothpaste" by Brooklyn's Extra Space (artists, musicians Joey Puleio and Chris Kyle) is full of surprises. If you were to pull apart the points you might find country twangs that resemble pedal steel guitars in orbiting in space or discordant progressive rock flurries or proto punk twists that feel like they were seeded from sounds first realized in the late 70's or languid surf punk from elsewhere. I really like when art surprises me but is more cohesive than jarring, more artful than taking left turns for no other reason than to mess with my head.
In this way, my first introduction to Extra Space (this song) made me think of artists like Pavement and The Smile's latest album ' Wall of Eyes' while also thinking of the indie rock tropicalia of artists like Pedro the Lion and Big Thief. Cool, artful, thoughtful sounds.

Extra Space is a band from Brooklyn. Joey Puleio and Chris Kyle began playing together in in early 2023 after many years of friendship. They set out on a mission initially to make some extra space/clean up and organize their shared rehearsal studio, but subsequently the two began sharing songs and unfinished parts of their own along the way. Soon enough extra space was made both in the room and as a new project of its own. In their newly re-organized space they wrote and recorded their debut record Green Season.
