"high times at the end of the show / wrote in to the radio go / and it's a fire warning / a fire warning..."
The sweet and savory caveats of "Fire Warning" by Some People, the English avant power pop duo of (sometimes London / sometimes New York based) artists Orson Fry and Callum Dearden gets close to you with a intimate sound. That sound propelled by an amazingly magnetic vocal countenance and sort of pure cross-generational pop rock aesthetic feels as classic as it does retro fresh, at least to me. There is something about the pristine rock sound that feels rooted in late 70's rock / garden rock or even the early 2000's indie rock when a lot of bands were dipping in to revival rock atmospheres.
Some People, here, feels so compelling, so analog on tape (whether it is or not). I mean so many artist today in the indie rock world bury their vocals in the now obligatory shoegaze style and Fry and Dearden are going the other way.

Inspired by the likes of Big Star, Talk Talk, and the Strokes, English power pop duo, Some People, is the songwriting partnership of Orson Fry and Callum Dearden. Childhood friends, they reunited a decade later in New York City. Their early songs were lighthearted efforts, dreamed up while exploring the American South. Next, they relocated to Arles in the South of France, to teach at an alternative day school in the rural Camargue. Red Chair their first release, 2023, was inspired by Arlésienne nights and the Camargue’s rugged landscape. Fire Warning, following later that year, speaks to the turmoil of the contemporary moment, via its elliptical storytelling and imagery. Their next single Mary is set to be released in 2024. They are based between London and New York.
Great sound, great fucking sound.
Tell me if you dig it too. "Fire Warning" may metaphorically elude to the state of the world and the world is particularly fucked up, isn't it. Things can get better, vote for hope people, not cults of personality. Politicians are generally corrupt, all of them. Vote for the lesser evil always.
