"She's got this red dress on and at the end of the song she whispers in my ear / She said she's feelin the mood and she knew that I knew she'd wanna take it further..."
The crystalline rock punch of "She's So Good" by PHELIX, the project of Toronto, Ontario multi-instrumentalist / songwriter / producer Eric Vanier, is gleefully magnetic and retro refreshing. Within the indie rock sphere, there has been a slow descent (during the last decade) into a hazier sound. Maybe it is the result of shoegaze, of lo-fi, of psychedelic strains of surf punk and desert rock or maybe a byproduct of down and dirty recording in bedrooms and bedroom closets (been there, done that). AND I like the subversive nature of that sound. I dig it. Then again, there is also something about aesthetics that might draw from cleaner tones, from late 70's rock tones and the clarity of 80's new wave.
LINER NOTES:
["She's So Good" is the second single of the 3 song EP "Places That Feel Oddly Familiar". Drawing on many classic rock influences, this song inspired the whole project.]
The track written, arranged, sung by Vanier who also plays guitar and drums [and supported by Joel Bezaire (guitar), Dexter Frank (lead guitar), Harrison King (keys), Samuel Laramee (synth /FX), Drew Barrett (bass) and Gabriel Giammaria (tambourine)] is a cagey broad rock track, with a cross generational, multi-genre'd sensibility. I feel jammy rock textures that could have existed any decade since the late 70's. Textures that push into art rock-esque places, 80's new wave, boogie woogie glam (circa 1978) and 2000's revival rock shifts all the while possessing a potent power pop prowess. For whatever reason I flashed on artists like Kaiser Chiefs and Franz Ferdinand.
Cool track, a lot to love, a lot to digest.
