"Miss you now / I tried so hard not to waste you / You’re doing fine / Gotta' find a way just to make it / Right moving clockwise / Am I that late?"
The enchanting now and nostalgia of "Candice" by Moscow based shoegazed indie rock Mental Map is beautifully rendered simmering with appropriate eruptions of airy chords, lovely shuffling drum beats, heavy bass, feeding-back guitars, tom tom beats and hushed vocals galore that might make you long for the wide eyed wonder of youth but not it's bruised heart brevity. I am smitten with Mental Maps unabashed 90's rock sound that feel (to me) like an amalgam of bands like Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Pixies with more current neo psych indie bands like Crumb.
I think what is instantly appealing, magnetic in fact, from the get go (besides the unbridled urgency that swings instead of runs) is the absolutely artful layers of sounds, the guitar lines that intersect like a woven basket within such a well balance sound. Also, I really love the vocal countenance and the poetry that tumbles out in such artful, punchy ways.
To leave and not looking back?
Would it be so perfectly fine
I don’t know
Don’t know how
Would it be so perfectly fine
To leave and not looking back?
Would it be so perfectly fine
I don’t know
Don’t know"
LINER NOTES:
“Candice” is the first single from Mental Map's self-titled LP. It is inspired by the late 90s emo/indie rock scene. This song is about poignant loneliness and dreadful nostalgia for a wasted relationship that in fact never happened. The main character is obsessed with a fictional person, living in an everyday fantasy. Dreaming and longing.
Mental Map is Lynn, Evan, Serge and Kristina.
