"Sarah found out the hard way with the first two / when the third died she used painting to get through..."
The blunt force trauma of the very personal "Painting" by Baltimore, Maryland indie rock band Icarus Phoenix, is moving, even beautiful while not pulling any punches. Throughout this confessional song, IP, the artistic outlet of extradordinarily prolific singer-songwriter / musician Drew Danburry and his band (Eli Sims on drums, Leena Rhodes on guitar / synth /vox and Brendan Russell on bass) leaves no hard fact hidden, unturns familial stones and the heaviness, maybe especially if you have experienced similar things, sits in your stomach and churns into a deep ache.
Danburry shares openly in LINER NOTES: "It's about how my Mom took an art therapy class after her son/my brother died of cancer. More than that, really. But that's the brief sum up."
The lyrics, poetic but hardly drawn are riveting and heartwrenchingly bare away from the melancholy vocal melodies and music:
"A spleen full of cancer young hands so needy
and constant calling leaves no time to be healedwhen the brakes went out the truck flipped over
there in Wyoming life had other plans
And so one day when you sat next to his bed
he said I'm going home today and then your son was dead
when you tell your children that their brother's passed on
and then you get dressed and off to church you go
you came from tea leaves and found religion
you left that chaos cause life had other plans"
