"why don't you teach me to be sweet..."
The fast and furious alt rock / punk pummeling of "Woman of the Year" by New York based post-punk group Rat Palace is seriously bad ass. I hate the simplification but it just is, it is what we call in the rarified music critic vernacular, a face melter. I can say without equivocation, that I haven't heard a song so punk spicy, so savagely punchy, so meaty kinetic and progressive in years. I mean this song, besides feeling wildly entertaining and making me want to mosh and destroy furniture, has a lot going on, a fucking banger with a lot of complexity too. It is a song I want to hear live, it is a song I want to play to, it feels holy inspirational in terms of it's bad assery (I said it again).
As my brain is trying to describe it and my eyes are gleefully rolling around trying to connect those invisible dots I will say that "Woman of the Year" has the hybrid punk / surf rock verisimilitude of the Pixies, the proto prog art rock intricacies of Television and Pavement, the post punk revivalism of Bloc Party, the proto post hardcore diversity of Fugazi, the politico empowerment of Poly Styrene and X Ray Spex, the audacious rock experimentation of Faith No More and the bold faced guitar power of Rage Against the Machine while (all the while) sounding distinctly like Rat Palace through and through. In a week, the names and faces may change slightly but sonic originality and artistic abandon will stay the same.
This absolute killer song is from the band's recently released debut full length "Dust Free Home" and accompanied with an equally killer Official Video by Carlos Rivadeneyra and Akiva Henig.
LINER NOTES (bracketed) that you should read:
As a whole, “Dust-Free Home” explores several tempos, moods and genres and “Woman of the Year” offers a window into the fast and heavy, punk-leaning side of Rat Palace — playful guitar riffs and a syncopated drum beat contrasting the loved-and-lost bitterness of the vocals. In its quick two minute timestamp, the track and its complimenting music video picks you up, sends you on a head spinning subway journey amidst a lover's quarrel, and sets you back down a little dizzier than you started.
