"Eyes like the sun / There's no more to take / My path golden / Ride new morning / Hand in rein..."
The light and airy pop escapist, progressively painted "Make Way", the second collaborative single from Asherville, NC's Tin Foil Hat and Philadelphia, PA's Andy Loebs, is the kind of tightly wound song that reveals more sonic gems each time you listen. Organic and electronic sounds interconnected with blends of hyper pop, funky bass predilections, abstract movements stirring in jazz dipped post rock and psychedelic fusion as a framework for curious lyrics expressed with surprising vocal melodies, sewn together with beautiful harmonies, is just wonderful and different. Apart from the awful run on sentence (unique songs get me amped up), I have a sense that these musician songwriters have a pretty vast knowledge of all these genres and maybe have dipped in old school vinyl stashes at relative's homes, at the 70's sections of record shops or thrift stores.
Oddly or not oddly enough a lot of cross generational artists / bands flashed in my brain while listening to "Make Way", like Todd Rundgren, like Aphex Twin, like Joe Jackson, like Radiohead, like Steely Dan, like 10cc. Direct sonic correlations or not, sometimes sounds bring up long buried splinters beneath my artistic skin (or something like that).
A smattering of those wonderfully curious lyrics:
Slide to make the sky floor
Make way for the king behind my distant door
Where did I hide the key
To the place where I can sleep
Again, in the mouth of the secret killing me
Die blinding sun
There's no more to take
My eyes swollen
Hide new morning
Will it fade
It touches my lips then I'm afraid
Check that my court is secured
A kingdom of shame
A fortress of waste endures"
Have fun people and take care of yourself.
