"devil pulling at the strings / crossing chemicals inside..."
The progressive hybrid rock twists and cool hushed storytelling of "Pulse" by Los Angeles based psychedelic alt rockers Dark Dazey feels like a carnival maze with magic mirrors, some that are portals to elsewhere. I mean, there are so many surprises that you will likely have to listen to this elegant song at least a dozen times to be able to anticipate, remember where the song is going. The clipping cadence of "Pulse" a jazz rock spin with spying eyes and big sweeping kind of Pink Floyd-ian psychedelic waterfalls shift, rushes, move two steps back, turns and runs. If it were a movie, it would have multiple back stabs / double crosses and have a pivotal scene at a French disco. At one point it gets all kind of sludge metallic / doom goom with amazing drum fills and chaotic lead guitar breaks. It is the songs kind of grand guignol moment before settling into it's outro as credits roll. It is stunning stuff and sophisticated stuff all at the same time.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
Not sure where this poetically, sonically deep L.A. alt rock band will end up. I hope they are afforded all the opportunities they deserve. Five, maybe seven years from now I could see them performing with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra bolstering their sound. I have a feeling anyway.
Cool.
