"and when you get close to me / I can feel the silence..."
Someone at an Interpol show once told me that the key to a great indie rock band is that (for the most part) you can listen while holding a beer and not spill it. It is a funny realization but in terms of total indie vibe, I get it. I thought about that while vibing to the cool, crunchy, bending atmospheres of "The Rising Tide" by London based (by way of the Thames estuary coastal town of Southend-on-sea) indie outfit First Day of Spring, led by Samuel Jones' songwriting. This track draws you in with it's broody nature riding on emotional urgencies and guitar lines that float and stab on the offbeats, a bass / drum beat that digs hard into the pocket. "The Rising Tide" also dips into slower time sigs when it feels right. A perfect dynamically rich musical narrative that tells it's own story as the vocal countenance, part post punk with slivers of emo poison penned lines dipped in melancholia spouts reflective words. All this and I swayed without spilling one fucking drop.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[the rising tide is about observing your surroundings and finding a place internally, where you can feel authentic in your own thoughts, beliefs and values without any external deluge of influence. It’s about being an individual. It’s about being strong.]
[First Day Of Spring, a 5 piece outfit led by Samuel Jones’ songwriting, has bloomed. Previously in bands such as The Bellybuttons, Velvet Morning, Rocket Ship TV & Mr. Yolk, the band has always been involved in different musical projects.]
Totally dig this sound, a complex indie rock tapestry with commiserations and gut punches.
