""Magnet Man" is a testament to the spontaneous synergy and artistic exploration that defined this extraordinary gathering."
Musical improvisation, at its worst, maybe an exercise in frustration and some stolen time but at it's best, clicking with a handful of musicians, brains and hearts seemingly insync and creating something potently artful is purely magical, there is nothing like it really. It feels like reading each other's mind, something akin to the Mr. Spock mind meld. I thought of, remembered these kinds of moments as I listened to the magnetically raw "Magnet Man" by the aptly named Experimental Music Summer Camp.
The resulting mayhem, over modulations, the "Altered States" slamming into walls regressions, the screaming radio transmissions like souls feeding back, the industrial punkery, the sludge pop sucking, the throttling alt rock bipolarisms all feel potently dark and fun. Like an amalgam of Faith No More (or various other Mike Patton incarnations), Tropical Fuck Storm, Butthole Surfers and the guy at the liquor store on that mysteriously scary drug, "Magnet Man" is like a hard core meditation that can transport you to other otherworldly places.
[The chosen venue, a rustic barn studio transformed into a musical sanctuary, was integral to this ambitious project. Here, in this serene environment, a select group of musicians participated in an immersive improvisational journey.]
[Conceptualized by OSC founder and composer Christopher Bono, the project emerged in 2018, following the completion of the still love album from Ghost Against Ghost. Bono brought together an extraordinary group of friends to form a new improvisational ensemble. Among these were multi-instrumentalist Thor Harris and bassist Christopher Pravdica, both celebrated for their work with the influential post-punk band Swans. They were joined by cross-disciplinary musician Anni Rossi and acclaimed record producer Kevin McMahon.]
[Special guest artists enriched the retreat, including jazz legend Karl Berger and singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer, adding unique flavors to the collective improvisations].
[From this creative crucible comes "Magnet Man," a standout track that encapsulates the spirit of the retreat. "Magnet Man" is a testament to the spontaneous synergy and artistic exploration that defined this extraordinary gathering.]
