"I believe in lying awake / now I see how good it can be / living in a state of confusion / what illusion (?) you're all I see..."
The new post punk / alt rock (viewed through dark gothic sunglasses) sound of "Summer Breeze", by London-based trio Black Doldrums, sounds less like revisionist rock and more like the real deal and I mean the REAL DEAL as if this trio are actual time travelers from 1983 British cobblestone streets. The sensory feeling is urgent reticence, youth as survivors of the turmoil of the times that they ultimately want to be champions of. The good and the bad holding hands and rubbing off on each other like the throttling bass lines and guitar strains that feel pearly bright but dirty too and, of course, the shuffling active drumming that skips along ahead of the beat. This post punk framework, darkly romantic as a raw framework for frontman/guitarist Kevin Gibbard's evocative drawl feels like much needed escapism and a reminder of times that weren't pushed by corporate algorithms.
About the track Gibbard shares: “This song could easily be called 'second chance'. It’s not really about summer but summer breeze is used as a metaphor for a period when given a second chance and a sense of optimism is felt after meeting Sophie (Landers). A breath of fresh air."
I am feeling sonic connections to iconic bands like Joy Division, The Chameleons, The Church, The Cure or an amalgam of all of them. "Summer Breeze" is from the band's upcoming sophomore album "In Limerence" dropping on October 18th (2024) on Fuzz Club.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[The follow-up to their 2022 debut album 'Dead Awake' stays true to the band's spirit whilst pushing things forward in a way that feels timeless and more meaningful, and brings with it a newfound clarity and lyrical honesty. Delving into themes of regret, loneliness, confusion and obsession, it's little wonder that the album title is 'In Limerence' – a state of intense, all-consuming romantic longing: "There is a constant theme of trying to find happiness in a confusing modern world. In a time of protest, this album is itself a protest by expressing how to feel in such a world."]

Kevin Gibbard and Sophie Landers produce a contemporary form of gothic post-punk. Their songs contain hook and lead tribal drums and euphoric guitar textures that frame introspective lyrics. They are known for their intense live performances, creating their own style of post-punk driven by overwhelmingly vicious drums, distinctive atmospheric guitar chords and melodic bass. "“A mix of Gothic-rock and shoegaze sounds to die for” Rolling Stone “A fierce combination of post-punk, reverb, drone and melody” Uncut "Youthful and ambitious contemporary rock 'n' roll" - shindig! “Awe-inspiring… Black Doldrums create transient and euphoric dark Post-Punk.” Louder Than War
