"no ozone / in the zone / cuz it's my zone to be free from me / and me alone / going westy and we were out back / wearing all black / are you metallica or tupac?"
The exuberant sonic hybridity of "J.A.F.A" (just another f*cking Aucklander), by Auckland- New Zealand's alt rock stylists Capricore, crisses genres and crosses time zones and time frames. The slashing guitars, slapping drums and bawdy bass lines against vocals raps, silky croons and guttural wails suggest experiments gone awry but in a good way. Listening I had a sense of wonky abstract early provocateurs like 70's Pere Ubu or Captan Beefheart but I also thought of early Mike Patton creations like 80's Mr. Bungle and Faith No More or 90's Infectious Grooves and Living Colour. "J.A.F.A" has a gleeful kind of punk tropicalia stuffed, intersecting with rap, alt rock, funk and post punk. I have a strong feeling that Capricore's fans / audience love them and if there were participation medals given to fans those fans would be for Chappell Roan's fans on one end of the spectrum and Capricore's fans on the other.
LINER NOTES share:
[Often described as a modern take on Split Enz, Capricore takes influence from classic New Zealand artists, filtering their sound through a fresh, alternative lens. Their style altogether has been praised by critics as genre defying, delivering a rich blend of post-punk, alternative, and pop-rock with atmospheric undertones.]
....the vague comparison is a trip because I saw Spit Enz way, waaay back in 1981 in Reseda, California. I was a wee lad and, of course, I am fucking old now. They were incredible by the way.
