"I'm just a conscious breathing animal x3 / Just a couple little dogs x3 / In God’s Hot Car..."
The rambling, boot tapping, buckle strapping swagger of "God's Hot Car", by West Yorkshire bred, Glasgow based post punk / feargach punk provocateurs Conscious Pilot, comfortably straddles the performance art lipstick of proto punk artists like Human Sexual Response and the self flagellation of artists like The Dead Kennedy's or The Grim and I am speaking of attitudinal artistic outcomes, not necessarily direct sonic linkage. Get me?
I totally appreciate the sparse bass and drums attack as ambient sounds and squealing guitars fill in the spaces as Joe Laycock happily chews on the scenery, gobbles things up and spews forth such lovely vocalizations. Dogs in a hot car as a brain poking image makes me think of the capriciousness of life and of our ability to save each other in the nick of time nearly every single day, if you care to.
LINER NOTES:
[Founded by Joe Laycock and Jack Sharp from the ashes of the theatrical punk group Cheap Teeth, Conscious Pilot continue to make waves in the scene with the upcoming release of their sophomore EP. Unlike their debut, Epoxy Plains, which was primarily written by Joe and Jack in a more solitary process in their native West Yorkshire, Wipe Clean was crafted collaboratively by the entire band in a shared rehearsal space. With a move to Glasgow and the addition of acclaimed producer/drummer Chris McCrory (Catholic Action, Walt Disco) and guitarist Emmy Leishman (Big Girls Blouse), Conscious Pilot have evolved into a post-punk supergroup. The EP's production is a testament to the band's newfound collaboration as they embrace a more organic approach to songwriting. Recorded in the intimate confines of Glasgow's Green Door Studio and produced by McCrory, Wipe Clean captures the raw energy and DIY spirit that defines the city's music scene. While Conscious Pilot's signature linear arrangements and ambitious melodies remain intact, the EP showcases a newfound freedom and spontaneity that reflects the collective effort and open dialogue that went into its creation.]
The band's sophomore EP "Wipe Clean" is due to drop on October 18th, 2024. If you like social commentary scowled and crooned then you need to check out Conscious Pilot.

Founded by Joe Laycock and Jack Sharp as a successor to theatrical punk group Cheap Teeth, the pair birthed the project from their joint love of immersive, beat-driven soundscapes and an exploration of subtle shifts. Featuring members of Catholic Action and Pressure Retreat, the band aims to urge the listener’s ear into progressively choppy waters whilst simultaneously grounding them in firm lyrical soil. Having built up an archive of songs over the past year, the band is set to peek their head above water with lead single “Halfway to Hockney”. Recorded by Matt Peel at the Nave in Leeds, the track is centred forgivingly around an individual’s thirst for meaning, as the protagonist falls perilously from the tree of self-identity, grasping at every characteristic branch on the way down, desperate to not be swept away by their impending crisis.
