"it’s really nothin’ / but the world is loomin' large / i wanna love you / but I don’t know where to start / you try to hide it so well but I know there’s a couple scars / my little pollyanna don’t you know you’re a superstar..."
The folk rock swung, pedal steel adorned "Pollyanna" by singer songwriter Dylan Rockwell lassos you from across the room and pulls you close. It's vocal melody bathed in a lovely lilt and sort of folksy drawl is so busker punk pretty that you want to sing along and, quite frankly, that is enough to sell the song but then the lyrics start to smack you in the face. On the surface it feels like a relationship song while the words start to sink in your head and raising eyebrows. Slowly the existential fraying threads and melancholia get's tied in knots and when you read this below, the songs reveal makes the song more deep and more thoughtful.
Dylan shares:
[This song isn’t about someone named “Pollyanna”, but rather the word “pollyanna” meaning an unflinchingly optimistic person. That’s never been me but I’ve known many pollyannas and I wrote this song about them. The lyrics explore the dichotomy between my reality and their's.]
Sometimes I like to dive head first into a song and I did just that with "Pollyanna" but as someone who has struggled with insecure thoughts with long depths of pessimism, this song had me remembering a younger self. A sad skinny kid.

[I wrote, recorded, and produced this song in my basement apartment in the heart of Washington, DC. I've been recording DIY for 10 years now and I think this song and the rest of my EP is my best work yet.]
"i try to lighten up the mood as if you dared me
how do you carry all the weight you seem to carry
i cannot understand, but i try
i just want to feel your light
covering darkness that ensnares me"
"Pollyanna" exists on Dylan Rockwell's current EP "False Dawn" and I hope you check it out.

“Pollyanna” lyrics
it’s really nothin’
but the world is loomin' large
i wanna love you
but I don’t know where to start
you try to hide it so well but I know there’s a couple scars
my little pollyanna don’t you know you’re a superstar
there’s really nothin’ like the way you fall apart
you’re always smilin’ as you’re pickin’ up the shards
i am a fatalist
but I find it necessary
i’m on the waiting list
for the local cemetery
how do you keep it all together when the world is so scary
my little pollyanna, you are my sanctuary
i try to lighten up the mood as if you dared me
how do you carry all the weight you seem to carry
i cannot understand, but i try
i just want to feel your light
covering darkness that ensnares me
i’ve been flippin’ through the book of revelation
i wanna fall into a world of your creation
i got a feeling deep inside
and i need some help some times
paradise is only what we make it
