"Who do you know / Besides me / Who do you know / Besides me / And do you like / What you see / Who do you know / Around here..."
The progressive ID rock twisty turns of "Who Do You Know" by New York's artfully experimental The Overhead Bins, is one of those songs that is perfectly suited for navigating your car through late night traffic or deep listens on the couch with headphones on. On a previous thought piece on these guys and in reference to their song "I Could Fight" I wrote:
"...my mind flashed and fluttered back to 1978's English rock duo Godley & Creme's "An Englishman In New York", but equally I thought of Queen, T-Rex and Sparks. A pastiche of highly stylized artists who were not afraid to pull from baroque, burlesque, cabaret, kitsch, art pop and punk all at once. A desire to be conceptually artful in 360 degrees not only sonically so"
This sound here on "Who Do You Know" is drastically different, not unexpected as The Overhead Bins mix is up stylistically, shapeshifting even within the songs on their 2023 "Telethon" album (and I like that). Here (on "WDYK") from the get go, with the beautiful hyper guitar lines and equally riffy bass lines jig sawed against ever changing drum patterns, the progressive post rock meets alt rock meets dream theater is instantly addictive. The high register vocal countenance kills too with long artul sustains that counterpoise the rapid fire musicality. The prolonged attacking styes that flare up into an extended climactic cyclone of sounds is radical, is artfully badass. In reaction and in terms of like minded attitudes I could not help but think of a progressive diverse range of artists like The Smile, like the Synchronicity period of The Police, like Porcupine Tree, like TV On The Radio and others. Cool.
