"you picked me up and took me right home / all the way to the barn / you would drive / cuz you were drunk / anyway we laid a farm..."
The country dance sway and twangy folk melancholia of "Underwater" by Hanemoon, the singer-songwriter, indie folk rock project of Berlin's Hans Forster (Seaside Stars / Man Behind Tree / The Sealevel) has tell tale signs of 60's folk influences and contemporary jangle pop meets surfy psychedelia meets emo folk and melancholy pop all kind of stirred together. I thought of artists like Wilco, like Kevin Morby, like Sparklehorse and Grandaddy, AND will likely feel other shades of well grounded other artists. Besides the sort of wanderlustful, ramble and rose cadence, Forster's vocal countenance goes a long way in selling the vast, darkly romantic atmospheres while feeling totally down home. I can feel the gentle plaintive edges around his voice. This song hinges on that great somber vocal personna.
LINER NOTES:
[Usually releasing with Jigsaw Records (Portland, Oregon) this November Hanemoon is putting out an EP via the janglepop specialists Subjangle (Pretoria, South Africa) who still do EPs on physical format. "Easy On The Wildlife" contains 5 tracks in the digital version and 6 on a limited CD edition.]
AND
[ Also typically for Hanemoons records not everything here sounds jangly powerpop. "Underwater", 2nd single announcing the EP release on November 24 (physical) /25 (digital), is slowly diving into Country-Folk melancholia, pushed on by the wonderfully slack drum playing of Forster's longtime musical companion Endai Hudl.]

As known with Hans Forster (Seaside Stars / Man Behind Tree / The Sealevel) those songs are harmony centered, guitar driven and multivocal. Jangly fuzz meets power-pop aesthetic, as can be heard on the teaser for the EP, the single "They bring the war back home", released in October. "Easy On The Wildlife" is a mix of new and old but unreleased material. It follows the album "Rain or Shine" released on Jigsaw Records in March 2024.
"Berlin's Hans Forster has been making incredible janglepop records all century, starting with Seaside Stars & Sealevel in the '00s to his current project, Hanemoon”, Chris MacFarlane, head of Portland’s Jigsaw Records.
