"Somebody lied about tomorrow / Some people see just what they want to believe / Somebody laughed about the mantra / Some people see just what they want to perceive / And my dreams of you came true in the morning..."
Swallowing the double lead sexiness and rolling sophisticated pop rock storytelling of "My Dreams of You", by Longplayer, the solo project of songwriter, multi-instrumentalist Mikey Long, and I not only feel gleefully satiated by the pure pop constructions but the earnest nostalgic universe building has me thinking of an amalgam of pop forward true 70's rock outfits like Klaatu, like Badfinger, like Gentle Giant, like ELO as well as more contemporary similar edged artists like Drug Cabin, like Pond, like MJ Lenderman that also fall into progressive predilections when need be but somehow, overall, feel kind of genre agnostic. Take all this brilliance and sprinkle a kind of old school emotional purity of a Bread or Harry Nilsson.
Apart from apologizing for the super long run on sentence and pulling references that may be from your dad's vinyl collections primarily, songs like "My Dreams of You" and the kind of Burton Cummings-esque "Find Your Way" feel steeped in the kind of dreamy, psychedelic, pop rock atmospheres that stirred in folk, classic 50's rock, the epicenter of it all, ie The Beatles and all the glorious bands that were directly inspired by the fab four and became distillations of it all. That is to say, contemporary artists like Longplayer, like Mikey Long and his wonderful collaborators have, within, their exorcised art, a sense of history. Another run on sentence, fuck.
Nice LINER NOTES:
The songs on the record were written and recorded by Mikey in Frankenstein form:
Layering guitar parts and having musician friends hop on tracks, Drums were recorded at studios on both sides of the US coast such as the infamous Gary’s Electric in Brooklyn. Whether recording alone or with a rotating cast of incredible Los Angeles musicians, Longplayer aims to add to a classic approach.]

Somebody laughed about the mantra
Some people see just what they want to perceive
And my dreams of you came true in the morning
My dreams of you came true in the morning
One swallow doesn’t make a summer
Nor one fine day can make your happiness stay
And just like you I see a comma
Right after every single word that I say
And my dreams of you came true in the morning
My dreams of you came true in the morning"
