"you look like a blue sky baby / let me peel the paint / grass stains and a sun burn / wild flowers trace / a winding path / you fall back / through the smog yeah / what we have / tender's not / half as much / as the way / you look..."
The endearing home spun telling and vast trails of "Blue Sky" by Vermont bred, Los Angeles based Gaptooth, feels like a warming fire place on a biting cold day, inviting and somehow a stunning coalescing of yesterday, today and tomorrow. I love what I am perceiving as 70's folk rock atmospheres injected with hints of 90's cowpunk and current iterations too. I mean I felt a dash of Jackson Browne during the wistful cadence and the spunky punches of artists like Cracker and I feel the subversions of a Gillian Welch, Courtney Barnett and Kevin Morby's / Cassie Ramone's short lived folk punk outfit The Babies.
I am blown away by the vocal sound but especially the way Gaptooth sews her melodies and lyrics together, slight pauses making sentences a patch quilt of evocative, poetic phrases and, again, sonic seeds from iconic pasts somewhere between the rustic dreaminess of Kate Wolf and the stately folk countenance of Judee Sill or the country yelp of Emmylou Harris and the pop folk beautiful ease of Linda Ronstadt. Wow.
"Blue Sky" is the opening song of of Gaptooth's upcoming EP "The Wheel".
