"We were big eyed bugs / Candy colored beetles living there in our termite tree / With the sharp tooth grubs..."
The spacy vintage sci-fi pull cast against ambient glitchiness and abstract lyrical surrealism makes "Forward Evolution" a curious gift. The atmospheres that feel dipped in lo-fi subversions and elegant sparseness had me thinking of an unknown indie film with a surprisingly endearing Nicholas Cage performance. At least that is what I am seeing in my mind's eye (it could happen). Ian Hinkley's busker punk vocals against the musical bed made me think of artists like The Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev sprinkled with a faint gingerly touch of Neil Young.
"Forward Evolution" floated by me, side eyed me and caught my attention but not in a really big way but I kept thinking about it and then thinking about it some more. It is the first track from Ian Hinkley's latest album "The Last Cool Summer", a true solo project with Ian crafting everything you hear. He does leave the mixing / mastering up to Takeshi Lewis.
