"if only I got up and smiled / pretend it was another life / maybe we would have made it back / back to it baby..."
The heartbroken shards of glass, the souring of something once rich and sweet of "Mori" by Kowari, the project of violinist Damien Chierici and pianist Louan Kempenaers with lyrics and lead vocals by the always enchanting Belgian singer Benni, is beyond mesmerizing. Like an intimate lost indie film that feels like the found footage of a love story not meant to be, "Mori", is stunning in it's beauty. The production seemingly simple and understated, it pushes all the right buttons, the sad dance between piano and violin as a framework for Benni's vocal countenance had shivers skating against my skin as I closed my eyes and listened. The production on Benni's voice is very intimate, unadorned in terms of it's upfront presence like truth telling to a friend and when there are hints of some vocal effects they feel like lost memories. The song in total is brilliant on many levels as both a listening post and a mirror.
LINER NOTES:
[Benni wrote Mori's lyrics about a hope erased by the fog. The secret wish to return to a relationship that should not have been, that will no longer be. The stairs, tarnished by crying, will gradually regain their colour.]
[An instrumental project with electronic influences and a cinematic universe.
