"Startlight bird assured me we were friends / Right before he stabbed me once again / His halo got him outta jail free / Just another punishment for me..."
The happy, drunken melancholy languid drive off a pier aesthetic of "EARLY MIDLIFE COMPROMISE", by the enigmatic, sideways Memory Land, feels like the most surprising of indie films where characters walk through doors walking on ceilings, think Ari Aster directing a zany comedy or Steven Spielberg taking a stab at a slasher movie. Not that the abstractions feel that abstract, I mean the musical arrangement / composition here is as gorgeous as it is quirky. I also, very much, love the vocal countenance, slightly inebriated, conversational, broken, a bit aloof but with wrinkles of hope bolstered by a sardonic soul. Maybe I should not be surprised that the seeds of this little stunner comes from an odd, really odd occurrence as Liner notes mention:
"A friend of 10 years suddenly got a girlfriend and ghosted me, never said bye, or why or anything just blocked me on all platforms and I never heard from him again. Its a strange feeling to be treated that way and this is the song that came from it."
My mind is spinning for answers, I love these kinds of awkward friend interactions. The only thing I can figure out is that the new girlfriend poisoned the friendship for whatever reason or the friend was not a real friend but the kind that uses you when you are needed. A convenient friend.
In terms of sonics, aesthetic or attitudinal artistry this wonderfully crafted song story, now go with me on this, could be an amalgam of Stephen Malkmus (Pavement), David Lowery (Cracker), Ben Folds, Randy Newman, Brian Wilson and Harry Nilsson.
