"tonight the fox is in our ferns / the day is overflowing / and the shotgun blast of evenings past / keeps the city snowing..."
The hallowed ground folk acoustic push and pull of "In the Ferns", by Massachusetts bred / Denver based songwriter Wholihan, is propelled by a voice that commands attention, a little bit sad and a little bit sagely. As a song that is dipped in rustic imaginings and a stately, sort of 60's halcyon days of folk presentation it grabs hard but tenderly, like a neighborly embrace with a sense of love and belonging.
I love the lyrical spread here, the poetry that feels like literature from a hard bound novel that you found tucked away seemingly lost in your uncle's attic.
"tonight the fox is in our ferns / the day is overflowing / and the shotgun blast of evenings past / keeps the city snowing / the evergreens divorce their leaves / the mountain it is snowing / and as I put on my skis / I say please / let my love keep growing..."
The lyrics have unrevealed stories between the lines, maybe stories about familial good times and bad, of things that once where cherished now broken, I don't know but am enjoying the vague and focused imagery of my life and the connections I feel spurred on by the import of this song and Wholihan's place as the author.

Wholihan’s journey as an artist has its roots in his early exposure to legendary musicians like Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Neil Young during his elementary school days in Portland. Drawing inspiration from these iconic figures, Wholihan started playing the guitar and writing songs in 2020. His friend played a pivotal role in teaching him the art of home-recordings and production, paving the way for his musical exploration.
