"Your little house on the hill / Chemical spill, kitchen remodel / Careful not to go numb / You might get what you want / If you're looking for monsters..."
The soulful twists and jazz rock fusion spins of "Stealing from the Man", by five piece Phoenix, Arizona jazz rock indie outfit Herbert Walker, feels gorgeous and cool. The rolling bass (with occasional plucks), the pearly keys, sparkling guitar chords and shuffling drums is totally worth the price of admission but the added very evocative vocal performance and lead drops is icing on the cake. Mixed analogies aside, I like the kind of late 70's, early to mid 80's jazz pop leans and just the way the song absolutely swings and jams, it saunters, it sprints, it runs up hill without heavy breathing. Herbert Walker calls their aesthetic "blue-collar chamber pop" and, by their estimation, "blends pop, jazz and freak folk into thoughtful, sometimes anxious indie rock music", and I fully take their descriptor at heart.
To me, they also drop palpable amounts of storytelling, abstract, curious, mysterious and I love that.
LYRICS
Your little house on the hill
Chemical spill, kitchen remodel
Careful not to go numb
You might get what you want
If you're looking for monsters
Oh, I'd rather be dead
Than pretend to be them
Is it vintage or garbage
Oh, come share the bread
That I took from the man
Who steals from my mama
One for one for one for one for one for one
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
Away on business again, covering the world like a stripe
They promised to make you feel sane
Softer than butter, safe as a friend
With enough money to trust
Trust anyone, make your tears taste like candy
Oh, I'd rather chop off my hand
Than shake it with them
Is it snake oil or water
Come, come join the band
We'll get back at the man for taking it all
One for one for one for one for one for one
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
Away on business again, covering the world like a stripe
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
And I feel as light as the wind, blowing through a forest fire
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
Find me where I've always been, in your ear like a siren
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
How many days and nights left
