"I wanna know where you go / After the show / Did you go home? / Yeah..."
The alt pop wandering third eye of "You" by, indie singer-songwriter Kirsten Izer, feels mysterious, soars to ethereal places and asks questions. I love the sort of trip hop electronica happening in this song, I am a champion of understated, perfectly placed sounds that has ambient atmospheres that wrap around you. "You" is that. Don't get me wrong, it is highly produced, wonderfully produced but doesn't sound like it is, the ebb and flow, the emotional musical arc is so engaging. Of course, a huge part of this pull and push is the song itself and Kirsten Izer's vocal countenance that is bathed in questions, relationship questions (in my mind) that might have to do with the old existential tugs of where do I begin and where do your start or vice a versa and is 'we' an entirely different spiritual animal, entity??
Of course, these are my questions (veiled laughter) not Izer's but those and many others arize when I listen to "You". It is that kind of song and the one word chorus as realized by "Izer", in layers of vocals, is magnetic, is drop dead gorgeous with equal parts longing and sadness. Now, for the record this track wa written by Izer and co-produced with ARIA Award winning producer Randy Belculfine (Tones and I, Tanerélle) and, as LINER NOTES (bracketed), reflect [“You” is a poignant reflection on unconditional love and the enduring bonds that transcend time and distance].
[“It’s about that special person that you have such a strong connection with,” Izer shares. “No amount of distance or silence can change how much you care. You love them and you wonder how they’re doing, but they don’t need to call or explain—their existence is enough.”]
"You" (to me) is unique across the pop landscape maybe because it sort of feels seeded by a particular 80's period that ran more subversive than your standard 80's pop aesthetic which doesn't feel as dark, hmmm?? or maybe I am feeling 90's post punk atmospheres underneath now that I think about it.
[Born in New Jersey to visual artists parents, Izer has always felt a deep need to tell stories. After a five year stint in New York as a music publicist and journalist, Izer decided it was time to tell her own story as an artist and packed her bags for Los Angeles. She’s released three singles and self-directed music videos to much acclaim, and is gearing up to release her anticipated debut EP in spring 2025.]

Indie singer-songwriter Kirsten Izer is set to release her new single, “You,” on February 27th, 2025. Written by Izer and co-produced with ARIA Award winning producer Randy Belculfine (Tones and I, Tanerélle), “You” is a poignant reflection on unconditional love and the enduring bonds that transcend time and distance.
Sweet yet profound, “You” captures the complexity of loving someone from afar—whether it’s an ex, a friend, or, facetiously, a stranger you don’t really know. The song explores the bittersweet reality of falling out of touch while still carrying immense care and empathy for the person. Even as they evolve into someone unfamiliar, the connection remains indelible.

“You” is an ethereal dose of art pop, combining sweeping synth pads and crunchy guitar licks with Izer’s airy, layered vocals. The result feels melancholy yet assertive, reminiscent of artists like St. Vincent, Fiona Apple, and Mitski. Izer continues to establish herself as a compelling voice in the indie music scene, offering listeners a story that is both intimate and universal.
