"How can I explain a feeling that I don’t understand? / Like water down the drain, I let you slip between my hands / And I don’t know why I never could give you enough..."
The pristine pop purity of "Maybe It's Time" by Dr. Rocket, the ever changing, evolving Seattle-based project created by singer-songwriter Nick Carver, feels deeply drawn or oil painted. This is to say that the emotional yellows and blues are not water colors that wash away easily. While there are wells of melancholia and maybe even innocent scars beneath the surface, the sense is that the 60's / 70's white picket fence atmospheres aren't for show or tongue and cheek or kitschy but instead as real as when Kermit sings The Rainbow Connection. At least, I fall for it every damn time.
The musicality is vast and beautiful, the stuff of a once jazz kid spreading his wings, well placed folk pop guitar shapes, wonderfully sung vocal melodies that feel like that forever kid side of Weezer or the pop punch of The Turtles. Maybe it taps into the important naiveté that we all possessed before we knew about all the monsters in the world, maybe even on our own street.
I dig this song, I dig what is happening here and the musical break is fucking heavenly.
"Maybe it’s time I settle down
Give it my allHave you around
Figure it out and put all my thoughts and fears to bed
Give them a rest
Maybe it’s time"
"Maybe It's Time" is from Dr. Rocket's latest album "Buoy" out now.
