"just can't fit the words together / to say I deserve better..."
The effervescent indie rock subversions of "New Sweatshirt", by Los Angeles enigmatic artist Fletcher Sides, is as contagious as a measles breakout in Texas. Ok, that was bad and totally uncalled for but "New Sweatshirt" does gleefully embed in your brain casting youthful imagery to the back of your head. For me it has that kind of old school energy of a mid 90's touchstone song like 95's "1979" by Smashing Pumpkins or New Order's "Bizarre Love Triangle" about 10 years prior. Not that these songs are sonically similar but they all encompass the appropriate amount of angst, desire, existential worry, loss, sacrifices and small successes of the 'before years'. For whatever reason, I also thought about the certain teenage dystopian films when Harmony Korine was the rising phenom director that he never became. Youth is, afterall, equal parts shock and awe, (right?).
Sonically, "New Sweatshirt" jams, grabs you by the hand or the scruff of your neck and takes you for a car ride downtown in the dark or on skateboards in the glare of the sun. Such a cool, magnetic, evocative track. The Official Video is cool too.
"New Sweatshirt" is written by Fletcher Sides and Kyle Teese with FS commanding all instruments except for synth and drums performed by KT.
