"Well it’s not easy preaching to the tired / But when it comes to running down the clock, you take the cake / I know you meant to fix it in the rewrite..."
The full throttle heartland alt rock indie barrage of "Mistakes", by Calgary Alberta based post punk power trio Night Committee, is one of those punching anthemic rock affirmations that undoubtedly gets small venue crowds moshing and large venue audiences jumping up and down enmasse. What Andrew Wedderburn (guitar and vocals) Nicola Cavanagh-Whitfield (bass, vocals) and Joel Nye (drums) have crafted is a sound with blended elements of garage rock rawness, alt rock heaviness and sort of power pop revelry that feels particularly everyman, what might have been called blue collar rock decades ago but now, for me, might encompass any kind of demographic that has to fight politico or existential threats.
In any event, the song tugged at me because Mistake is my middle name and as much as all successes are buttressed by the many mistakes made before, whether in all kinds of endeavors artful or not, it takes years to learn to have the perspective that mistakes are not necessarily bad. They do, afterall, point us in the right direction.
From the get-go, "Mistakes" absolutely kills, the band has crafted a dense, upfront, potent alt rock sound and shouty vocal persona that might feel somewhere in line with artists like Superchunk or Japandroids or Titus Andronicus or Les Savy Fav.
"Hold yourself a handful till your half-life makes the heart-rate over. Have a little heart until the half you hold, the part you want to feel right now.
Well we’ve got floods that fit in any basement. And we’ve got roofs that look good blowing off there shake by shake. But don’t ask what’s the worst thing that could happen?
You made mistakes, you make mistakes, we make mistakes. You made mistakes, you make mistakes, we make mistakes..."
Night Committee's latest full length album "Your Plans Mean Nothing" just dropped on March 22 2025.
LINER NOTES:
[Night Committee are a post-punk power trio from Calgary, Alberta. Formed in 2009 by Wedderburn and Nye (after the breakup of their previous group, beloved Calgary outfit Hot Little Rocket) with their pal Lorrie Mattheson on keys, they built a devoted following in Calgary fusing 80’s American punk and 60’s psych-garage. They’ve shared the stage with acts like Bob Mould, Hot Snakes, Wares, and By Divine Right, and released two records, Crime (2010) and Heaven (2013). After a three year hiatus from performing which saw Mattheson depart, Night Committee is back in power-trio form, with a new set of noisy buzz-saw power-pop. Their third full length album Your Plans Mean Nothing will release on March 22 2025.]
