"he's going out to see his favorite band / the old tour t-shirt looks good / down front he stands / conducts with his hands / grabs a set list if he can..."
The sweetly graced rock indie glow of "Favourite Band", by Dublin's psych pop / indie rock outfit Soft On Crime, from it's balladic sweet first half to it's uptempo mosh worthy breakaway (and back again), goes down so very easy because if you are here reading this, you can relate to this love song of sorts. From the get go, I personally feel a sort of 60's / 70's Kinks flavor and I love that. Soft On Crime manages to instill a sense of nostalgia, a youthful insight for all of us who supported bands because they felt like mates or like our big brothers who would look out for us amid the mayhemic pain and pleasure of youth. The jangle pop aesthetic with winding bass pushes, in the pocket drums and evocative, intimate vocals feels wonderfully, potently raw. The musicality providing emotional melodies to criss-cross the stirring, wistful vocal melodies. The track feels lovingly retro, but more so, just plain timeless.
The opening lines say it all:
"he's going out to see his favorite band / the old tour t-shirt looks good / down front he stands / conducts with his hands / grab a set list if he can / oh please believe me / I love you so much / all the apples in my soul / gets switched to your tune / transport me to the moon / Oh heaven / I hope it never ends..."
This symbiotic relationship between the audience between the fans that come back again and again to the band members is a magical thing. I have felt it from both ends and while it has been a lifetime ago since I would do Peter Townsend knee to chest jumps while crunching on a guitar, I did an acoustic set a few years ago in Georgia and while putting my guitar away, one timid soul sauntered over to tell me that she liked my set. The rush was felt again so many years later, a moment of exhilaration and a strange type of awkward embarrassment at once.
"Favourite Band" is from Soft On Crime's cassette/digital album 'Street Hardware' (EatsIt Records, 2024) and available via the band's Bandcamp page.
Love this song for many reasons.
