"let the shadows fall / let it go / control..."
Part industrial punk dystopia / part surf punk abandon / part garage blues rock on high, "Let The Shadows Fall" by Montréal’s electro-punk collective AUS!Funkt, and from their upcoming album "Rewire The Damage" (out April 25, 2025), is a blistering cross-generational collision of subversive sounds. To me, the sonic imagery steps back as much as it does forward. Artful punk lightning strikes seeded by iconic proto punk / post punk colors like an amalgam of visionary artists from James Chance and the Contortions, D.N.A., Suicide, SWANS, Sprain, The Cramps, Einstürzende Neubauten, Nine Inch Nails, The Gories and more. Depending on your age, your perspectives, you will reference other such mayhemic bands and, admittedly, I tend to go way back to the late 70's / early 80's.
LINER NOTES (bracketed):
[Rejecting the lyrical and musical excesses of rock music, AUS!Funkt combines the groove of electronic music with the subversive aggression of post-punk. The lyrics, spoken and sung, provoke the mind with their realism and repetition. Electronic beats seduce the body into movement, freeing it from its torpor. On top, the guitar spurts out clouds of noise, while the bass supplies the melody. AUS!Funkt assaults the senses and uneases the mind while you dance to its unsettling disco beats.]
In the end, "Let The Shadows Fall", slaps you in the face and makes your legs get wobbly in an uncontrollable dance, like Elvis himself resurrected in a Zombie flick and dancing to The Gories.
