"He finds love / She finds love / they find love quite tough / how do you find love? / internet love / Pictionary love / even Dad had a fiver on love / how do you find love? / how do you..."
The lush theatrical sheen, emotionally torn skin of "Even Dad Had A Fiver On Love" by Northampton UK based 9 piece alt-indie collective WOAHGETTER, via Silent Kid Records, has such a compelling sound from the get go that you cannot help but be drawn into its storytelling frayed or not. Beautifully produced, the songwriting is solid in it's grand way while riding on sad undercurrents. Singer-songwriter / producer Mark Cann's vocal countenance, complexly artful and emotional, chews the scenery without feeling kitschy, painting a picture of white picket fences that are infested with rot. The sonic atmosphere (overall) is a lot of things, a furious hybrid rock storm of 80's new wave / romance wave, Euro pop, sophisticated Emo Pop, post punk and more like an amalgam of Duran Duran, Roxy Music, ABBA, Los Campesinos! and Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with the resonant, sultry vocal prowess / contours of a Martin Fry (ABC) or Bryan Ferry (Roxy Music).
["I'm sure most of us can easily call to mind a 'Dad' figure that has seemingly very little invested in the notion of love," says WOAHGETTER of the titular character, "but even in the coldest of cases, there's usually some small stake in something classifiable, if only tenuously, as love... which probably says more about the nebulousness of the word 'love' than it does about any particular individual.”]
LINER NOTES (excerpted / bracketed):
[The narrative is delivered by an end of tether baritone, accompanied by five other (as far as we are aware) genetically unrelated voices, giddily riffing on the limitations of a seemingly singular eponymous anti hero and is set against an assuredly danceable and momentarily anthemic arrangement. With the fusion of vocal tones, the chorus reflects a relatable frustration towards the meaning of love and how to find it in an increasingly chaotic world.
The self-produced track promises to resonate with fans of sharp-witted, deeply affecting storytelling. Imagine if The National taught a masterclass in brooding indie rock and Father John Misty delivered a lecture on musical storytelling, WOAHGETTER would be the brilliantly rowdy students who learned the lesson, then blew up the classroom.
The band succeeds with a minimalist track large in scope with philosophical references strewn throughout, as a recursive self-portrait encouraging introspection from the listener. Philosophical references to Sartre’s ‘The Look,’ and Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letter Seven among others succeed in rewarding curiosity and offering broad modes of interpretation.]

I admit to not knowing much about Woahgetter but this first introduction to Mark Cann's songwriting and universe building using a talented cast of different performers (at different times) as a sort of indie collective is an impressive, inspired introduction for me. The proof is always in the pudding and this is some outstanding pudding.
