"surfy western noir and psychedelic sweeping telling complex narratives, this is a haunting instrumental eulogy"
The darkly dreamy, beautiful post rock psychedelia of "Gravity" by Alien Sun draws you in with dense progressive rock fusions hanging sparsely in space, the ambience filled up with radio transmissions in Spanish. Those voices from 2016 sound ghostly cross cut against the potent musicality, original audio samples from the conversation between air traffic control and the pilots of LaMia Flight 2933, three of the four pilots who would be killed shortly after this conversation.
LINER NOTES:
[Inspired by the tragic plane accident that killed 71 people, including most of the Chapecoense football team, in Colombia, November 2016. The aircraft was flying with illegally insufficient fuel and went down just a few miles from its destination. Despite being aware of the severity of the situation, the crew did not declare an emergency until only seven minutes before the crash. This track features original audio samples from the conversation between air traffic control and the pilots.]
Like a instrumental eulogy, the track holds melancholia and beauty both in it's hands due to the haunting textures of all the instrumentation involved but especially the guitar work that feels pushed by alt rock power chords, sonically rich leads guitar shapes, fanned and noodled, big riffage and long sustains, surfy western noir and psychedelic sweeping telling complex narratives, this track ultimately tells a story about "greed and cowardice".
