"I'm alive / deep in tonight / cruising for a feeling / nullified / no end in sight / lucidly I'm stealing..."
The cagey, runaway psych rock striations of "Tarantula Eye" by L.A.'s Hooveriii, and from their 5th full length album "Manhunter", is a furious bit of alt rock dipped in heavy psychedelia punctuated, not only by massive guitars but artful caterwauling sax wails. I appreciate the truly engaging rhythm section with radical drum shuffling and big kinetic bass lines as a rock anchor for sort of hushed slightly aloof vocals uttered as if the singers are hypnotized. The big moments are really big, crushing lead guitar attacks, explosive drums and that sax keeping an eerie drone throughout unless it is screaming. The atmospheres, for me, feel like 60's psychedelic rock on steroids colliding with big surfy punk and I did think of OSEES a bit in terms of the wild abandoned sonic largesse. Sometimes seeing OSEES live feels more like an exorcism of sorts than a performance and I feel that attitude here as well.
The "Tarantula Eye" (Official Video) is a whole lotta fun too. This song, in fact, feels so filmic with it's toes in the past, present and future that it would be very cool and appropriate in some upcoming movie. The movie would certainly be a wild one, a bit QT-esque with dark moments and hysterical ones.

After four albums of extra-dimensional exploration, Hooveriii delivered “Manhunter” with the controls set directly for the heart of the cosmic groove. Expertly synthesizing their influences and still managing to bring even more to the party, from spiky post punk to beautiful new age excursions and mammoth 70’s arena rock hooks, “Manhunter” delivers not only their best album yet but an instant classic for all the psych-heads, stoners and dimensionauts.
