The whimsical haunting and genre smashing of "Too Late to End", by Norwegian artist/producer Coral Head, is, at once, artfully coy and dramatically audacious when it chooses to be. Something about this very cool aesthetic that rides on pearls of baroque pop with a sort of Machiavellian undercurrent of 90's indie / chamber pop / goth / post punk pushed through subversive filters while exhibiting a smartly slanted pop prowess as well. A log of cross generational blending going on that I am loving. A sound I didn't know I needed until I experienced it. Obviously, the universe building is impressive but the addictive quality, the connective tissue is Embla Alnæs Fimland's magnetic vocal presence expressing her engaging melodies in a way that is both aloof, mysterious and sultry. Kudos to added ambient support from harpist Linnea Vestre and Kristina Fadeeva on cello.
Love this. I could cycle through this for hours.
All the lyrics kill but these are in my head:
"All the woe
In all of you
Does it slip?
When I’m with you
Not sure why
It’s about to creep
On the edge upon
My shoulder
Tell my why it’s about to creep
Tell my why it’s about to creep up here
Tell my why it’s about to creep
Tell my why it’s crawling up here"
Does it slip?
When I’m with you
Not sure why
It’s about to creep
On the edge upon
My shoulder
Tell my why it’s about to creep
Tell my why it’s about to creep up here
Tell my why it’s about to creep
Tell my why it’s crawling up here"
LINER NOTES:
[Kicking off her musical career by lying about her skills as a bass player to get into a band, Coral Head grew an interest in writing and producing her own music. Influenced by acts like Blonde Redhead, Elliot Smith, Warpaint and Portishead she digs into a hazy, slow-burning mood by blending soft melodies with sluggish drums and deep bass.]
