"throw out my night swatch / dress up my healing / out of the daylight / under my ceiling shines / my light bulb screaming..."
The veins popping heavy cracking alt rock hammer of "Pesticide", by Canadian 3 piece alt rock outfit Black Paint, feels like a speed metal barrage in slow motions, sludgy feargach punk leans and blistering heavy metal musicality pummel your senses. I am seriously digging guitarist Steven Layzell's vocal attack and the sonic bass and drum shifts, by Tyler Smith and Eric Croteau, that exist on bloody pins and needles of garage rock, angry man punk, caterwauling noise punk, alt rock, gothic rock and more. Often times it is the case that politico punk outfits or straight noise rock or experimental rock bands (whether it is Idles or Tropical Fuck Storm or METZ) create massive diatribal sounds, yes, but there is not a strong guitar component, no killer lead breaks or guitar bloodletting overall. This is not the case with Black Paint, within the massive subversive heaviness, the lead guitar prowess is fucking high. I mean the swagger contained in Layzell's guitar noodling on "Pesticide" is gloriously thrown down and something to enhance and thrill. I love that.

[From listening to Death Grips’ “year of the snitch” and recording their first batch of tracks over a Benjamin Moore Paint shop, Black paint splashed into the Toronto Music Scene with an electrifying stage presence, featuring all three members wearing black coveralls, white airforces, and black or white instruments. Black Paint managed to kick off their live performance journey in 2022 after the pandemic, including a nearly sold-out performance at Lees Palace. This set the stage for a series of appearances at renowned venues around Toronto. Later, they joined Cigar Club's "Day Now" tour around Ontario. This helped Black Paint hone their improvisational skills, allowing for dynamic and unpredictable live performances.]

In late 2022, Black Paint released their debut single, “Born Again," recorded at Union Sound Company in Toronto, with assistance from Juno Award-winning engineer Darren McGill, (The Dirty Nil, Pup, Arkells). Subsequently, they unveiled three additional tracks from the same recording sessions throughout 2022. Entering 2024, Black Paint showed no signs of slowing down. They played many festival slots including Canadian Music Week and Aurorapalooza, sharing the stage with Juno nominated artists. The band caught the attention of producer Brian Moncarz, (Texas King, and Our Lady Peace) who invited Black Paint to record at Noble Street Studios, where the band recorded four tracks. They are set to release the first of the four tracks October 23rd.
