"Partly starting from zero, slow directional vibe / Way out there / Let it sit in slowful silence / Barely know what I did right..."
A slow surreal western of a song, lost but forgiving, "Slowful Silence", by indie singer-songwriter / musician Bill McElnea, exists in a night sky of twangy guitars, shuffling drums, and pushing bass lines feeling like a soundtrack for an askew leaning NEON film.
"Partly starting from zero, slow directional vibe
Way out there
Let it sit in slowful silence
Barely know what I did right"
I love the almost sideways reggae feel with twangy cosmic country atmospheres and really feeling McElnea's voice with surprising vocal melodies that divert, dart and dash at times. The drunken cadence and swirling basslines courtesy of John McKnight (formerly of Fishbone) who also is featured on piano / organ, Cougar Estrada (formerly of Los Lobos) crafting drums that perfectly capture the off kilter wonder and Joti Rockwell swelling waves of pedal steel guitar create cross currents of beautiful energies and tensions.
"Staring off down the middle, whole collection of lies
Saved down there
Bleeding out right on the table
Peering down beyond alright"
If "Slowful Silence" was a movie it surely would be one with metaphorical relationship things happening, feature mournful moments, some illusionary passages and an occasional mild jump scare. And I LOVE the chorus.
"Any solace will do now babe
We’re here just passing the time
It’s chomping at my brain
Such a subtle abuse to take
Are we stuck here this time
Or do we find a way"
Dig this.
